Amazingly, Adam Sandlers, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” edged out “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, and “Hairspray” made a strong showing coming in third. Overall, moviegoers spread their dollars around, four films grossed over $20M each over the same weekend. I thought the Harry Potter movie would have been number one for at least a few weeks. Sandler’s fans remain loyal, he scored the ninth number one opening of his career. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Sandler’s movies, but he continues to prove he is a box office heavyweight. Showing more consistency then Eddy Murphy, Robin Williams, and Ben Stiller over the past 10 years. I give Sandler all the credit in the world for knowing his audience and continuing to give them what they want. Aside from his dramatic roles like Spanglish and Reign Over Me, his comedies always preform well.
Potter made $32 million in second place, so it had a big 2nd weekend, and it seems like it will continue to do well throughout the summer. This week’s out come shows that adults are flocking to the theaters as well as the kids. With “Hairspray” and “Chuck & Larry” doing so well, and Harry Potter & Ratatouille, in the top 5, there is something for everyone right now.
I don’t know what to say about John Travolta in Hairspray. He used to be the coolest guy in Hollywood, now everyone thinks he’s an in the closet gay, weirdo scientologist. What hppened to this guy? Also, as vane as he is and as gay as he seems to be, he makes one ugly woman in drag. Over the years, I’ve heard many a male crew member tell me stories about how he hit on them, and made them feel uncomfortable. The whole scientology thing, and the way he has treated his mentally challenged son, really makes me dislike him.
I do like Adam Shankman, the director of “Hairspray”. A fringe member of the gay mafia in Hollywood, Shankman has come a long way as a director, and is a class act. I worked with him when he was a choreographer, on the movie “The Out Of Towners”. He choreographed an hilarious scene, with John Cleese dancing in a hotel room. Every time I run into Adam, he is very friendly. and does not seem like he has been affected by his success.
