I was surprised too that Michael B was able to actually make this movie work, and surprised that Spielberg had the vision to see that he could considering his past attempts. I think the "cheesyness" that has worked against him in the past (can we say Pearl Harbor) actually worked FOR him this time around. The cartoon had the same sort of tone, and Transformers rides the line expertly.

I think everyone underestimated the movie because they forgot that little girls who were in 3rd, 4th grade etc...when the cartoon was popular loved Optimus Prime just as much as their brothers did. I think the nostalgia factor had a lot to do with it.

I went on opening night (ok, Tuesday, not really the opening night *winks*) and of the 8 of us that went, 4 of us were girls and all remember playing with the toys as kids.

I just hope they don't screw up the inevitable sequel, and leave a bad taste in my mouth. For now, I am DEEP into Transformers!

I hear the movie has impressive effects, but many lulls when there are no robot battles. I'm still not convinced, and will wait for the screener. Plus Michale Bey is a dick.
