The Paramount/DreamWorks co-production, “Transformers”, grossed an estimated $67.6M over the Friday-to-Sunday period and an amazing $152.5M since its early opening last Monday with 8pm preview shows. It also had the biggest Tuesday opening ever, even though it really opened on Monday. The Michael Bay directed and Steven Spielberg produced movie, also opened internationally and grossed a stellar $93.6M to date from 29 markets putting the global haul at $246.1M and counting. WOW! I underestimated the popularity of this movie, the origin of the movie is from a silly toy, and Speedy Pete says the “Transformer” video game sucks. I haven’t made it to go see the movie yet, but I’m not sure what the huge attraction is. The Visual Effects in the trailers look cool, and people like to see action sci fi movies in the summer time.
These are crazy numbers, $67 million for the weekend, $152 million domestic for the week, and combined with international $246 million in one week! It seems like it’s only going to grow, I have to credit Paramount/DreamWorks promotions for generating a huge buzz for this movie, and Michael Bay for putting it all together. The movie certainly has a chance to make in the $500 million range before the summers over. The budget for the film was $145 million, usually a film with that kind of budget has to make double that amount to be considered a blockbuster. Transformers is well on it’s way, covering the budget in its first week, domestically.
Disney/Pixar hit Ratatouille, continued to do well, for those who preferred a rat over sci fi. It took in $29 million for it’s second weekend, making it’s ten day total a solid $109 million. This G rated movie will continue to earn well throughout the summer.
Live Free or Die Hard performed well again, with an estimated $17.4M for third place this weekend. The PG-13 action sequel upped its gross total to $84.2M after 12 days. This is another movie that will be around all summer making money.
Robin Williams‘, “License to Wed” grossed an estimated $10.4M over the weekend and opened to $17.8M over its extended six-day mid week holiday launch. I’m sorry to say, I don’t think this movie will make much more. With some more summer blockbusters looming, this is probably the only week it will be in the top 5.

I hear the movie has impressive effects, but many lulls when there are no robot battles. I’m still not convinced, and will wait for the screener. Plus Michale Bey is a dick.

I was surprised too that Michael B was able to actually make this movie work, and surprised that Spielberg had the vision to see that he could considering his past attempts. I think the “cheesyness” that has worked against him in the past (can we say Pearl Harbor) actually worked FOR him this time around. The cartoon had the same sort of tone, and Transformers rides the line expertly.

I think everyone underestimated the movie because they forgot that little girls who were in 3rd, 4th grade etc…when the cartoon was popular loved Optimus Prime just as much as their brothers did. I think the nostalgia factor had a lot to do with it.

I went on opening night (ok, Tuesday, not really the opening night *winks*) and of the 8 of us that went, 4 of us were girls and all remember playing with the toys as kids.

I just hope they don’t screw up the inevitable sequel, and leave a bad taste in my mouth. For now, I am DEEP into Transformers!
