“Transformers”, was originally supposed to open on July 4th, Paramount moved it to the 3rd and then to the 2nd. Giving Michael Bay’s Transformers a 6 day opening. A chain reaction set off by Warner Brothers moving up the release date of the next “Harry Potter” movie to July 11th. Paramount decided to take full advantage of the holiday falling on a Wednesday, and maximize profits before “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, comes out. “License to Wed” also moved it’s opening to Tuesday, for same reason. Michael Moore’s “Sicko” also went to a wide release this week, trying to capitalize on the midweek holiday. The 4th of July, is not the best holiday to release a movie, when it’s on a weekend most people are outside all weekend. The studios like it better when it falls midweek. Many people will take the whole week for summer vacation, and will have more time to see movies. I’m not sure if that’s exactly true, but that’s what they think.
Here’s what I think about the 4th July movie openings.

“Transformers, will do pretty well for the 6 days that it opens making around 50 million. I do thing “Transformers” will ultimately die out, after this week, when people start to hear it’s not very good. It could on the other hand make 100 million this week, but it will still die out. Sorry to say I think “License to Wed” will tank, probably not be in the top 5 for its opening. Robin Williams is a great guy, and a very funny rare talent. I’ve worked on 2 movies with Robin and he is the most fun person I’ve ever been around. I wish him all the best, but this movie does not look good. Some people looking for a comedy over the holiday, will go see it. It does have star power with Robin and the guy from The Office, John Krasinski and Mandy Moore. I really don’t feel like this movie can hang with the competition from last week.

Disney-Pixar’s “Ratatouille,” which came in No. 1 over the weekend, will continue to do well. All the kids who didn’t see it last week will go this week, and just as many adults. I would not be surprised if it out does “Transformers”, and stays at #1 for another week.

“Live Free or Die Hard”, also will continue to do well, and will rake it in over the holiday. The Bruce Willis’ star power and the popularity of the character, along with a decent movie, will continue bring people to the theaters.

“1408″ will continue to surprise. This is the only choice for the suspense thriller, horror fans this summer. It will remain in the top 5.

“Sicko”, Michael Moore’s new movie, might crack the top 5, with a wider release this week. The adult, more intellectual crowd will see this one. The people who aren’t getting drunk all day and going to see fireworks at night, will go to see Michael Moore.

“Knocked Up” which has had long legs this summer, will continue to hang around. A good choice, for people looking for a wacky comedy. A movie some people might want to smoke a jay. before going, and laugh their asses off.
If I had to choose one movie to see over the holiday. As if I hadn’t been able to get to the movies all summer, I would see “Live Free or Die Hard” or “Knocked Up”. I wouldn’t waste my money on “Transformers” or “License To Wed. Happy Birthday America!
