Pan’s amazing production value, worth seeing
Over the weekend I finally got to see 2 movies that won Academy Awards last year, courtesy of Netflix.
Guillermo del Toro’s, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, was amazingly well done. The visuals were beyond reproach, and definitely deserving of Academy Awards for make-up for David Martí and Montse Ribé, cinematography Guillermo Navarro, and Art Direction Eugenio Caballero. I didn’t see a movie last year that could compete in any of those categories for the Academy Awards. Well done, a major achievement for the advancement of Latin filmmakers.
For me the film was so visual and there was so much to look at, I couldn’t keep up with reading the subtitles. I had to keep rewinding it, to read what was going on. I found it to be exhausting trying to take in all the images on screen, and at the same time reading. The subject matter also is questionable for adults. It is ultimately kids fantasy movie, with no basis in reality. I prefer more realism in my favorite films. “The Departed” was the best film of last year. The Academy got it right for once. Also “Pan’s Labyrinth” was shot mostly in Spain, because the producers could get more out of the 18 million dollar budget over there. It seems like they got there money’s worth.
The other movie I saw was Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”, ouch! Is this even a movie? I know it’s a documentary and won the Oscar for best Documentary, but please, how about a tiny shred of entertainment value. Even Michael Moore’s movie’s at least have a bit of a sense of humor, that keeps you interested. Unless you have an interest in Al Gore, or the subject matter, even some of his facts seem to have a certain point of view, the movie is a complete bore. DVDs should be distributed to the Insomniacs Association of America,, this movie can cure anyone who has a problem sleeping. Most of the film takes place in a classroom, with Gore lecturing students. If I wanted to sit through a boring lecture I would have signed up for a class at UCLA. I certainly wouldn’t have gone to a movie theater to watch Gore teach a class. Just goes to show you, that Academy voters do have an agenda, especially in this category. Always trying to make some kind of bleeding heart liberal statement in giving out the Best Documentary Oscar. Did Gore deserve to get an Oscar for this? Maybe, if they were giving an Oscar for the most boring movie of all time.
…Going Deep!

Gore’s film, the most boring movie of all time?
