MIAMI BEACH- Last week, actor and director turned restaurateur Danny DeVito was in Miami Beach for the launch of his new restaurant “DeVito’s South Beach”. The restaurant, formerly Ocean Drive’s trendy Joia, has held several Hollywood style parties last week to celebrate its opening.
“DeVito’s South Beach is all about the Italian flavor of my home,” DeVito said. “The sauce is just like my mother’s and my aunt cooked it. It’s exactly the same, exactly the same—the meatballs, the fish, the salads.”
The opening parties began last Monday night when DeVito hosted a private dinner for the cast of “The Sopranos”, (minus James Gandolfini) one night after watching the finale episode. Last Wednesday was the opening celebration which was open only to VIP’s. The restaurant’s bar menu will likely include DeVito’s new Premium Limoncello liquor, which he unveiled in April. DeVitos South Beach is located at 150 Ocean Drive and will be open daily for dinner from 5:00 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. weekdays and from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. on the weekends. Dinner reservations can be made by calling (305) 531-0911 or you can visit the restaurants website.
I wasn’t able to make it to South Beach last week, because I am a Hollywood working man, but I’m sure Danny opened it with style. Danny D is one of my closest and best friends in the business. I’ve known him for about 16 years, and I’ve worked on over 20 projects with him. He has gone above and beyond to help me in my career and personal life since I met him. We met on a movie called OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY, in 1991. He has been like a family member to me ever since. He and Rhea Perlman, and their family, are the nicest, warmest people in Hollywood. Me being from New York, and moving to LA not knowing a soul, Danny became a cornerstone of my career and my life in LA. Really, he’s the greatest guy in the world.
One thing Danny knows is food and how to eat. Danny and I have had many meals together, we love food. We’ll go out sometimes and eat like gavones, everything in sight. I love to eat with Danny, there is an art to knowing how to eat well. A nice meal, with a nice wine, is a joyous past time for any real Italian. Danny would never attach himself to a restaurant, unless it was done right and the food was excellent. I can’t wait to get down to Miami to check it out. …GOING DEEP!
